Twice PSV and Atlético Madrid played against each other in an official context. Just as often the Spaniards won. In practice matches, PSV was luckier. Five times both teams fought a friendly duel with each other. Twice PSV won, twice they drew and once the Madrid side won. A look at the mutual history.
La Coruña
PSV and Atlético Madrid faced each other for the first time in 1984. Twice in one week to be exact. The first meeting ended in a 2-0 victory for PSV, the friendly return ended 1-1. It would take four years before the two teams met again in a friendly. On August 14, 1988, PSV, as fresh winners of the European Cup 1, traveled to Spain for the La Coruña tournament. During that friendly the team of then coach Guus Hiddink faced a 1-0 deficit. Only in the final minute Stan Valckx equalized, after which Ronald Koeman and Gerald Vanenburg gave PSV the victory in the extension.
