PSV will face Ajax on Saturday. The Johan Cruijff ArenA will thus host the first big matchup of the season. We take a look ahead with some interesting statistics and notable facts.
Ajax is undefeated against PSV in their last five head-to-head matches across all competitions. The Amsterdam team won twice, while the other three matches ended in draws. Ajax has had a longer unbeaten streak against PSV only twice before: between 1969 and 1973, Ajax went ten games in a row without a loss. Between 2019 and 2021, that streak lasted seven games in a row.
In Amsterdam, too, Ajax has maintained a good record against PSV in recent years. The last three Eredivisie matches at the Johan Cruijff ArenA resulted in one win and two draws for Ajax. It is noteworthy that in the last two matches, PSV opened the scoring each time but ultimately failed to defeat Ajax.
PSV Concedes Very Few Shots
In the first four league matches, Peter Bosz ’s team conceded only 21 shots. Since Opta began tracking this data, no team has conceded fewer shots after four matches in an Eredivisie season. Only AZ also allowed 21 shots on goal in the 2024–2025 season.
PSV faced the most shots in the first fifteen minutes of the matches. During that phase, the opponent recorded six shots on goal, accounting for a combined Expected Goals value of 1.2.
Van Bommel inTop Form
Ruben van Bommelis intop form. The forward has been directly involved in a goal in each of his last three matches. During that stretch, he scored two goals and provided one assist.
In Amsterdam, Ruben has a chance to set a personal record. If he is involved in a goal again, it will be the first time in his career that he has done so in four consecutive Eredivisie matches. Previously, he had twice achieved a streak of three matches with a goal or assist.
Ruben is part of a PSV team with a strong offense. With fifteen goals in four matches, the red-and-whites scored the most goals this football season. Ajax scored eight times, but did so in just three matches.
Dest is important
Sergiño Dest has also been making his presence felt emphatically in recent weeks. The defender has been directly involved in four goals in his last three league matches: two goals and two assists.
Against Ajax, Sergiño could score a goal or provide an assist for the first time in four consecutive Eredivisie matches. The last PSV defender to achieve this for a longer streak was Jordan Teze. In April and May 2024, he was directly involved in a goal in five consecutive Eredivisie matches.
Ajax Awaits a Home Win
The Amsterdam team has not won any of its last four Eredivisie home games. Two of those ended in draws and two were losses.
Ajax could also set an unwanted record on Sunday. For the first time in history, the club could go five consecutive home games in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie without a win. Previously, Ajax had only twice started a season without a win in its first two home games: in 2005–2006 and 2016–2017.
So on Sunday, PSV faces an opponent that, despite its disappointing home results, possesses sufficient attacking qualities. At the same time, Peter Bosz ’s team heads to Amsterdam with a strong defensive record and several players in top form.
