PSV has succeeded in acquiring Paul Wanner from FC Bayern Munich. The 19-year-old midfielder signed a five-year contract in Eindhoven, will play with number 10 and will immediately join PSV 1 training on Friday.
At 16 years and 15 days old, Wanner was the youngest player ever to make his official debut for FC Bayern München. The German youth international's appearances in recent years included 35 Bundesliga appearances, 28 matches in the 2. Bundesliga, two UEFA Champions League matches and seven Conference League games. FC Bayern had Wanner play on a rental basis for SV Elversberg (2. Bundesliga) and 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 (Bundesliga) in the previous two seasons.
Earnest Stewart describes the left-footed Wanner as a player who can be of immediate value and who at the same time still has enormous potential. "Paul is a creative, dynamic, attacking and modern midfielder," PSV's Director of Football Affairs said. "He is an open boy, who asks a lot of questions. Really someone with the willingness to get better, you notice that in all conversations. Paul is a very welcome reinforcement for PSV, which we are very happy with. We see a wonderful future for him in Eindhoven, both sporting and personal."
The right move
In his own words, Wanner concurs. "I am extremely happy to be here and to be able to play for PSV from now on," said the new arrival after signing his contract at the Philips Stadium, in the presence of his loved ones. "I want to contribute as much as possible to the success here and help the club with goals and assists. I feel completely ready for this challenge and know that this step is the right one."
By his own admission, PSV was his first choice to start playing for. "Head coach Peter Bosz and the board members made it very clear to me that they really want me here and how I can help the team in the best possible way. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone at the club and our fans. I want to be successful here on a big national and international stage. I am sure it will be a great journey in which we will hopefully win a lot of awards."
Finally, Stewart addresses a special word of thanks to FC Bayern. "We are very happy with how the negotiations with FC Bayern went again this time and grateful for the good relationship we have built over the years."
