Phillip Cocu world beater

Who better to grace the latest installment of this Gallery of Honor than PSV head coach Phillip Cocu? In his active career a world-class player. Great tactician, disciplined, with great feel for the game.

Although born in Eindhoven, Cocu grew up in Zevenaar where he learned to play football at Door Combinatie Sterk (DCS). If there is anything that speaks to Cocu it is those three words. Cocu is a thoroughbred team player, not a macho, not a man who goes for his own chances. The club and the team's result is Cocu's top priority.

PSV - Barca - PSV
Cocu came to PSV from Vitesse in 1995, along with his buddy Chris van der Weerden, who now sits next to Cocu on the trainer's bench. After three years, he beckons abroad. It becomes Barcelona, where he plays six years at the European top and takes one title. In 2004 he is back at PSV in a midfield with Van Bommel and Vogel, later with Simons and Afellay. What class together! In total as a player, Cocu wins four national titles, two KNVB cups and two Johan Cruijff Schalen. From his first period at PSV, he is a regular on the left side of the Orange midfield. As with PSV, Cocu plays a major role, directing the game and guarding tactics. He plays 101 international matches, scoring 10 goals in them and has been active at three European Championships and two World Cups.

As calm and determined as Cocu plays, he begins his coaching career. Assistant at the Dutch national team and at PSV, just interim when Rutten drops out (wins the KNVB cup) and last season coach of the A1 (cup winner). Cocu necessarily wants to go through this route before starting the big work at PSV with his former colleague players Faber and Van der Weerden.
