PSV has faced the German top club eight times before. The balance is in favor of Bayern Munich: one victory for PSV, one draw and six defeats. The only victory dates from a game at home, in which PSV managed to win 2-1. Ruud van Nistelrooij and Luc Nilis were goalscorers at the time.
History
The first official meeting between PSV and Bayern Munich took place on September 17, 1986 at the Philips Stadium, in the European Cup I. Bayern won that game 0-2. In the return game it remained 0-0, so PSV was eliminated in the first round. A few years later both teams met again in the Europa Cup I, this time in the quarterfinals. The Germans proved too strong twice, leaving PSV in the last eight.
In 1999 they met again, for the first time in the UEFA Champions League. In the group stage, PSV lost 2-1 in Munich, but managed to win handsomely with the same figures in Eindhoven. To date, that is PSV's only victory over Bayern Munich. In 2016, the two teams last faced each other, again in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. PSV lost twice then: 4-1 in Munich and 1-2 in Eindhoven.
Meeting again for Paul Wanner and Ivan Perišić
For Paul Wanner, the game with Bayern Munich carries an extra charge. The 20-year-old midfielder was under contract with the German top club until last summer. In 2018, he joined Bayern's youth academy, after which he worked his way up to the first team. Wanner eventually reached eight official matches, giving him extra motivation to show himself against his former club on Wednesday.
Ivan Perišić is also experiencing a return against his old club. The Croatian played one season (2019-2020) for Bayern, reaching 35 official matches, eight goals and 10 assists.
Almost unbeaten in the Bundesliga
Bayern Munich had an impressive start to the Bundesliga. Until last weekend, coach Vincent Kompany's team was unbeaten, with 16 wins and two draws. Last weekend that run came to an end with a surprising 1-2 defeat against FC Augsburg, ranked No. 13. In nineteen league games, Bayern scored no fewer than 72 goals and only gave up 16.
