World Cup roundup

Following this week’s World Cup qualifying games, several countries have secured a place at next year’s tournament in Qatar. The Netherlands are among the countries that have qualified for the 2022 World Cup.

Oranje
Former PSV stars Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay scored late as Netherlands booked their place in the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Norway in the Rotterdam Kuip on Wednesday night. Louis van Gaal’s team dominated the game and created chances but it was not until the 84th minute that Steven Bergwijn finally broke the deadlock. Memphis Depay put the result beyond doubt in the first minute of added time.

Ibrahim Sangaré
Ibrahim Sangaré started for Ivory Coast against Cameroon on Tuesday. The midfielder’s team failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Eran Zahavi
Israel played its penultimate qualifying match against Austria in Vienna on Friday, twice surrendering a lead to eventually lose 4-2. Israel finished third in their group and will not feature in the 2022 finals in Qatar. PSV striker Eran Zahavi is expected to be absent for four weeks after sustaining a knee injury.
