“We showed great resilience”

Mark van Bommel thought Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Ajax was a fair reflection of the game. “The two teams were evenly matched.”

“We showed fighting spirit”
“After Ajax had taken the lead, we showed fighting spirit and hit back to salvage a pulsating 1-1 draw”, said PSV’s head coach at the post-match conference. “Ajax created four chances in the first half but Jeroen Zoet pulled off some fine saves to keep us in the game”, said Van Bommel, who added that PSV could also have been on top before the break. “We had three opportunities to strike on the break. We got chances to play our forwards clean through on goal, but made the wrong decisions with the final ball.”

Great resilience
Van Bommel saw his side get the second half off brightly. “But after we had conceded a goal midway the second half, we showed great resilience and fighting spirit. I am delighted with the passionate display, as we face a hectic schedule.”

Mitroglou
Van Bommel brought on Cody Gakpo and the substitution had an immediate impact on the game. Kostas Mitroglou was ruled out of Sunday’s game due to an injury. “We needed to make some tactical changes when we were a goal down. Mitro was not available but fortunately Cody Gakpo came to the rescue.”

No meaningful conclusions
Van Bommel could not draw any meaningful conclusions from the first six opening games of the season. “Each team has phases of development during the season. I am happy to see my team is fit and that we are making huge progress.”
