“We only have ourselves to blame”, admitted PSV captain Luuk de Jong in his post-match interview, after his side had thrown away a two-goal lead at FC Emmen.
'Should never happen'
De Jong, who had opened the scoring on fifteen minutes, did not know why things had gone wrong in the end. “It is a missed opportunity to take all three points. Conceding two goals in the closing stage should never happen. We put on a fine first-half display and got a two-goal cushion in the second half. We should have killed off the game but we did not. Dropping two precious points like this in the title race is not done. This is a dramatic 2-2 draw and we will have to pull ourselves together.”
‘Unnecessary’
PSV head coach Mark van Bommel also lamented his side’s ‘unnecessary’ draw. “We dominated the game but failed to score more goals. When FC Emmen had pulled one back, they played a long-ball game. It was the last minute; their keeper went up for a corner and they were lucky to snatch a late draw, capitalising on some sloppy defending”, said Van Bommel.
