“We have to take it on the chin and move on”

PSV head coach Mark van Bommel was shocked by his side’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of LASK Linz. “It was an emphatic defeat. We have to take it on the chin and move on, acting like men”, he said at the post-match conference. “We must stay together and cope with the pressure.”

Van Bommel attempted to analyse the heavy defeat. Speaking to the media, he said: “LASK Linz turned on the style with energy and aggression and we lacked the tactical discipline when they had scored the 1-1 equaliser. We were low in confidence after we had failed to win five consecutive games in all competitions. We have to carry on. There’s no other option. We have been dealt some harsh blows and actually I didn’t see this one coming. But we must now act like men and cope with the pressure.”

A lot of mistakes
Van Bommel saw his team get off to a dream start, when Daniel Schwaab opened the scoring from the spot after just five minutes. “We did not put in a fine first-half display, either, but after the break we  made a lot of mistakes”, admitted the German centre back. “We have to turn things around by getting a result. We are obviously very disappointed right now but we must keep our heads high and restore some pride when we take on Willem II on Sunday.”

Feel worried
Goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet was far from pleased PSV had conceded four goals. “We defended stoutly in the first half but lacked power after the break and made tactical mistakes. We are expected to win our games so of course we feel worried. We need to win our two remaining Group D games to ensure we will qualify for the  Europa League knockout stages. There will always be chances and it is up to us to make amends against Willem II.”
