PSV head coach Mark van Bommel met the press at De Herdgang training ground ahead of Sunday’s Eredivisie game against De Graafschap. He told the media at his weekly press briefing on Friday afternoon that winning the game is his main priority.
Van Bommel actually had just one question to answer. Ajax and PSV are level on points with five games to go but the Amsterdam outfit has scored nine more goals than PSV. Will PSV be able to make amends and clinch the Eredivisie title? “We know Ajax lead the pack on goal difference but it would not make sense to just go out and look to earn a victory with a large winning margin. Winning the game is always our main priority and Sunday will not be any different.”
Winning was enough on the last match day of the 2015/16 season, with a virtually similar scenario. Then head coach Phillip Cocu had predicted that PSV would clinch the title if they won all their remaining games. It looked like the title chase would be decided on goal difference but in the end PSV stole the title from Ajax who dropped points to relegation-threatened De Graafschap. Cocu hoped the nearest rivals would drop points and that’s exactly what happened. “And we also need to win all of our next five games”, insisted Van Bommel. “But scoring a lot of goals is easier said than done. We have netted an amazing 87 goals this season, which is not too bad. But there is one team that has found the back of the net even more.”
Not change game plan
Van Bommel does not intend to change his game plan. “I don’t think it will bear fruit to make wholesale changes. We will go out and try and win the game with a large winning margin but in fact that’s we what we always do. And that’s why we often score in the closing stages”, concluded Van Bommel.
