Van Bommel: “We always look to score goals and win”

Mark van Bommel faced the media at a conference on Monday evening, ahead of the second leg of the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round against FC Basel. PSV’s head coach insisted that he will not abandon his attacking philosophy, in spite of the 3-2 win in the first leg in Eindhoven. “I will never set out a team to try to draw a game. We always look to score goals and win the game and tomorrow won’t be any different”, said Van Bommel. FC Basel rotated players last weekend and suffered a 2-1 defeat against Sankt Gallen on Saturday, while Ajax took the Dutch Super Cup with a 2-0 win over PSV

Grow up fast
Van Bommel told the media after the 2-0 defeat that his players should grow up fast and insisted that this would be possible in three days’ time. “You can only learn from your mistakes. We lost possession at crucial moments and we know we will have to improve if we want to play football on the highest stage in Europe.” The PSV squad met on Sunday evening to review the Ajax game and start preparations for the encounter in Basel. Van Bommel does not think Saturday’s defeat will have adverse effects on Tuesday’s performance. “Of course you never get used to losing but there were plenty of positives on Saturday and we look to build on them when we take on FC Basel.”
