Van Bommel proud of team and fans

PSV head coach Mark van Bommel paid a huge compliment to his players after their brave display against Tottenham Hotspur. “We’ve fought like lions”

‘Did everything we could’
Speaking at the post-match conference, Van Bommel said: “We suffered a sour and narrow 2-1 defeat. After one minute we got a goal and we tried to defend it until the end. We did everything we could to get a result. Of course Tottenham Hotspur got some big chances”, Van Bommel continued. “But Jeroen Zoet was outstanding tonight and deserved a big compliment. We battled hard and everyone was fighting for the result.”

’Forced us back’
The home side pushed PSV back after Luuk de Jong’s early opening goal and upped a gear after the break. “We did not come to Wembley just to defend deeply, but Spurs are such a good team and forced us back. They are high quality. It is disappointing to concede two late goals. We even had a chance to make it 1-2 but obviously we did not deserve a win. We have given our all.  We had a very tough draw with some of the best teams in Europe, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Spurs. We’ve played four games so far and three times we’ve been leading.”

Van Bommel also want to pay a compliment to the fantastic travelling fans for their support in London. “Our fans were behind us the entire match and we got a standing ovation from them at the end. It looked like we were playing at home. The interaction between the players and the away fans was awesome.”
