Although Vitesse were down to ten men for most of the game, it was not an easy night for PSV. Luuk de Jong earned Mark van Bommel’s team a narrow and hard-fought 1-0 victory. “We were patiently waiting for an opportunity and then we made the most of it when it came.”
De Jong compliments Vitesse
PSV’s captain paid a compliment to Vitesse. “We know how to score a goal but we have been made to work very hard for it. When Doekhi had been sent off, Vitesse defended stoutly and we found it hard to break down their compact defence”, said De Jong, who scored the only goal of the match after he had controlled Hirving Lozano’s pinpoint cross very well. “That was a good cross and that’s the way I like to have them. I was in the right place to slot home.”
‘Patience is the key word’
PSV head coach Mark van Bommel lauded his players for a solid team display. “We were patient and finally made use of our numerical advantage. We were fully focused and showed tactical discipline, which is not easy. Vitesse are a good side and I am happy with the win and with a maximum 33 points from 11 games.”
