PSV face a hectic schedule. They hosted FC Basel last Tuesday and will lock horns with Ajax to contend the Johan Cruijff Shield on Saturday at 18.00, before travelling to Switzerland to face FC Basel in the return leg of the UEFA Champions League qualifying second round next Tuesday. It is a tough start to the new season but PSV head coach Mark van Bommel does not complain about the busy fixture list. ‘We will have to cope with it and that’s it”.

Van Bommel addressed the media at a conference ahead of the traditional opening game of the new season in Holland. The conference usually takes place in Zeist but this time PSV’s head coach faced the media in the press room of the Philips Stadion. “Moving the match to a later date has been no option. We will just play these big games.”

Van Bommel does not intend to ring the changes after PSV’s stunning fightback against FC Basel but did not reveal his starting line-up for Saturday’s game. “Each player has his own story. We work with players that have just joined us and with players who have returned to PSV after a loan spell and with players who have just started pre-season training after an extended holiday. We will rotate players as we play a match every three or four days the next few weeks.”

Van Bommel was accompanied at the conference by Ibrahim Afellay, who has been named as captain for the new season. “Ibi asked us for permission to continue his rehabilitation programme with PSV. I was very much impressed by his professional approach. When I observed him on and off the pitch I could not help noticing that he got all it takes to be a good captain.”
