“The ideal scenario? Grab three points.”

PSV will return to domestic action after the international break. Head coach Phillip Cocu faced the media on Friday afternoon, ahead of Saturday’s clash at Sparta Rotterdam. “The ideal scenario for us is to grab all three points at Sparta Rotterdam. If Ajax run out winners at home to Feyenoord on Sunday, who knows what may happen next. If Feyenoord beat Ajax, we will move into second place.”

”Who knows what may happen next?”
Ajax play host to Feyenoord at the Amsterdam ArenA on Sunday afternoon, but Cocu told the press during his weekly press briefing that he is primarily focused on Saturday’s clash with Sparta. “We must win”, he insisted before going into several scenarios.

“I told you recently that we would go out in search of a second-place finish, which does not mean we are short of fighting spirit. If Ajax win and we will have a tiny little chance of winning the title, we will give our all to do so. We can cut the gap back to two points with leaders Feyenoord if they suffer defeat and we win our game. It would boost our chances of winning the title for the third time in a row. But if Feyenoord succeed in beating Ajax, we will move up to second place. Either way, it shows how important it is for us to win the game at Sparta.”

‘We’re anticipating a tough away task against Sparta’
PSV are anticipating a tough away task when they take on Sparta in Rotterdam. Cocu:  “We claimed a narrow, hard-fought 1-0 win over Sparta in this season’s reverse encounter at the Philips Stadion and were knocked out of the KNVB Beker by Sparta, following a 3-1 defeat. Once we were a goal down, we never fought back and that’s something we must bear in mind when we go out onto the pitch on Saturday evening.”

PSV’s head coach is happy all his players have returned unscathed from international duty. “We have found the back of the net quite comfortably the past few games, which has helped boost our confidence. We’re having a good spell and only suffered defeat against Feyenoord. We’re eager to extend our winning streak. This is a crucial week. We have three massive games coming that we need to win”, said Cocu
