Manu Matuta scored in stoppage time to snatch a 2-2 draw for PSV U21 against Telstar in Velsen on Friday night. Nigel Thomas netted the 1-1 equaliser for the team of caretaker manager Ernest Faber.
Thomas on target
It was men against boys when Telstar hosted a young PSV U21 side. Yet the team of caretaker manager Ernest Faber soon found their rhythm and created the first few chances of the game. Ismael Saibari won the ball in midfield and found Johan Bakayoko, whose shot went across the face of goal. Jeremy Antonisse sent in a low cross but no forward was on hand to connect. The hosts took the lead in the 27th minute, against the run of play. Robin Eindhoven saw his effort saved by Kyan van Dorp but the rebound fell to Glynor Plet, who blasted home from close range: 1-0. It was a short-lived lead as Nigel Thomas kept his cool when one-on-one with Telstar goalkeeper Trevor Doornbusch, slotting home an equaliser in the 34th minute. HT: 1-1.
Spilled a shot
PSV U21 started the second half strongly, but the home side created the better chances. Van Dorp stretched to full length to push a shot away from a corner and comfortably gathered a number of long-range efforts but did not stand a chance when Telstar captain Frank Korpershoek headed home from a corner in the 63rd minute: 2-1. PSV U21 never lost their stride and Thomas just failed to connect with right back Shurandy Sambo’s cross from the right. Sambo came close when Doornbusch spilled a shot but the Telstar goalkeeper was alert and managed to hack the ball away in time. PSV U21 sent everything forward in the hectic closing stages and Manu Matuta eventually scored in stoppage time to secure a point, seconds before the final whistle went. FT: 1-1.
