Sparta v PSV: facts and figures

Sparta Rotterdam have made the most fouls in the 2016/17 Eredivisie campaign, while PSV have committed fewer fouls than any other Eredivisie team. Sparta welcome PSV at Het Kasteel in Rotterdam on Saturday evening.

Sparta have committed most fouls
A referee has stopped play for a foul committed by a Sparta player on average fourteen times each game. PSV players committed nine fouls a game. Two Sparta players top the list of players that committed the most fouls. Right back Denzel Dumfries has committed 62 fouls so far this season, while holding midfielder Mart Dijkstra committed 55.

Dumfries may set a new record: he has been shown ten yellow cards this season.  Guy Ramos (RKC Waalwijk in the 2011/12 season) and Joeri de Kamps (NAC Breda during the 2014/15) hold the record, with twelve yellow cards.

36-year-old Michel Breuer is a solid and experienced defender who does not make too many fouls. He has committed only twelve fouls in 26 games, while PSV centre back Héctor Moreno committed the same number of fouls in 22 games.

Sparta were promoted to the top flight of Dutch football last season after winning the Jupiler League title. Michel Breuer became the hero, scoring the decisive goal. The score was still 1-1 in the closing stages but then Breuer prodded home against Ajax U21. The final score was 3-1.

Breuer made debut against PSV
Breuer made his Eredivisie debut for Excelsior against PSV on 17 August 2002. Excelsior slipped to a 2-0 defeat on the day. After spells with  N.E.C. Nijmegen and sc Heerenveen,  Breuer returned to Rotterdam in 2014, when he joined Sparta.

Sparta’s Belgian striker of Italian descent is the man to watch. The 24-year-old has scored seven goals and has six assists to his name. He last found the back of the net on 27 November 2016.
