Schmidt’s reaction on draw and preview of the game against Fortuna

Roger Schmidt gave his reaction to the draw for the quarter finals of the UEFA Conference League, which paired PSV with Leicester City. “Leicester are the most formidable opponents PSV have met this season”, continued Schmidt. “They play in one of the strongest leagues in the world. They are a physically strong Premier League side. It is a tough draw and it shows once again that this is really a big competition in Europe. We are satisfied we play the return leg in our own stadium, which could be to our advantage. It is an occasion that I am sure everyone will be looking forward to.”

A remarkable season
Schmidt senses that the belief is growing in the squad. “It’s by no means a hard-and-fast rule that we still compete on three fronts in the month of April. We’ve all been waiting for this”, said Schmidt during his weekly press briefing. PSV’s head coach, who had just been informed of the quarter-final draw, continued to preview Sunday’s Eredivisie fixture at home to  Fortuna Sittard. PSV look to avoid dropping points now that the title race is still wide open. “This is another challenge after a tough mid-week European encounter. We’ve met them before and we know we have to be fully focused on the next task on hand.”

Fortuna Sittard
Fortuna are no strangers to PSV after a double meeting earlier this season. PSV ran out winners on both occasions. “We are familiar with their style of play after we faced them in the KNVB Cup and in this season’s reverse league fixture. We will need concentration for the full 90 minutes and playing a well-organised defence we look not to concede goals”, said Roger Schmidt.

Gakpo
Cody Gakpo did not come through the European encounter unscathed. “We have not yet assessed how serious his injury is. I think he is doubtful for Sunday and we hope he will not face a long time on the sidelines. But other than that we have the luxury of selecting from a near fully-fit squad”, concluded Schmidt.
