PSV put on an excellent first-half display at the Rotterdam Kuip, with Cody Gakpo bagging a brace. Feyenoord pulled one back in the closing stages and were awarded a controversial penalty in the last minute which Cyriel Dessers converted. PSV head coach Roger Schmidt could hardly hide his disappointment when he reflected on the game.
“It was a thrilling game of football until the referee made that controversial penalty decision”, said Schmidt, speaking to the press after the game. “It was never a penalty. I tried to speak to the referee but he didn’t want to answer any questions. It was a crucial decision in this stage of the campaign. It’s a shame that the match should have ended in this way. People may make mistakes, but this one was hugely disappointing.”
The controversial penalty overshadowed the excellent performance that PSV had produced. “We put on a commanding display and should have converted our chances into more goals. I am proud of the team’s display. It could have been a beautiful day with the title race hotting up, but unfortunately it was not to be.”
