Ritsu Doan strikes twice in 2-0 cup win over Fortuna Sittard

PSV have reached the next round of the KNVB Beker after a 2-0 victory at home against Fortuna Sittard. Ritsu Doan scored both goals, either side of the break.

PSV open KNVB Beker campaign
PSV opened this season’s KNVB Beker campaign at home to Fortuna Sittard. They had one mission: progress to the next round. PSV completely dominated first-half proceedings. Ritsy Doan unleashed a long-range shot that forced a save from Yanick van Osch and the Fortuna Sittard goalkeeper also denied Carlos Vinícius twice, pushing away his headers. Mario Götze also went close to opening the scoring but had his shot blocked. PSV created chances but could not find the back of the net yet.

Doan breaks deadlock
Ritsu Doan broke the deadlock in the 28th minute. The agile Japanese winger skipped past a number of defenders and found space to slot home the opener: 1-0. PSV kept on dominating play and centre back Armando Obispo produced goal threat with a glancing header and a strike from long range. At the other end, Joël Drommel pulled off a reflex save to make sure PSV were still leading 1-0 at half time.

Doan doubled PSV’s lead
Schmidt made two changes at half-time, bringing on Cody Gakpo and Bruma. PSV realised they needed a second goal to put the result beyond doubt and it was Doan who doubled the lead in the 62nd minute. He cut into the box and beautifully curled the ball into the top corner of the net. Beyond the reach of former PSV keeper Yanick van Osch: 2-0.

Richy Ledezma makes comeback
PSV had almost 30 minutes left to even further extend their lead. Doan was on fire but failed to control Jordan Teze’s cross. The Japanese international could not complete his hat trick when he made way for Richy Ledezma, with ten minutes remaining. It was a special moment for the American to make his comeback in the first team after a lengthy layoff. Maxi Romero, who had the crucial assist for last Sunday's winning goal at N.E.C., also got some game time. He was anxious to get his name on the score sheet but just could not score from a rebound. PSV comfortably cruised to the next round of the KNBV Beker.
