PSV U21’s campaign continued as they twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against MVV Maastricht on a cold Tuesday night.
Opening goal on eighteen second
Eighteen seconds were on the clock when the visitors from Maastricht took the lead. Joeri Schroijen, who had struck twice in this season’s reverse encounter, slotted home a cross from close range: 0-1. Dennis Haar’s side responded quickly to going a goal down. Joël Piroe was hauled down in the box in the 7th minute and the referee pointed to the spot. Matthias Verreth stepped up, kept his composure and sent the keeper the wrong way: 1-1. Wallenburg found Justin Lonwijk who had the goal at his mercy but Luuk Koopmans, on loan from PSV, pulled off a save to deny him. MVV regained the lead in the 42nd minute, when the advancing right back Martina smashed home with a crisp strike into the top corner. HT: 1-2
Equaliser and red card
PSV U21 went in search of an equaliser after the restart but were forced to try their luck with long-range efforts. But it was all square again on 64 minutes. Koopmans failed to collect a long-range shot and Joël Piroe was in the right place to tap home: 2-2. MVV were reduced to ten men in the 69th minute after Mares committed a foul on Kun and was sent off for his second yellow card. PSV U21 looked to take all three points and Zakaria Aboukhlal came close to scoring the winner in the closing stages. He controlled the ball with his chest, rounded the keeper but failed to bundle the ball home. Following the 2-2 draw, PSV U21 are sixth in their league. They will be back in action on Friday when they face FC Dordrecht (kick-off at 20.00)
