PSV U21 left empty-handed after a 3-2 defeat at Almere City

PSV U21 came from two goals down but were ultimately left empty-handed after a 3-2 defeat at Almere City on Friday evening. Peter Uneken’s team conceded all three goals from set-pieces.

Few chances
PSV U21 were a goal down in the Yanmar Stadion after barely four minutes when defender Radinio Balker headed home Youri Loen’s free kick: 1-0. Twelve minutes were on the clock when Youri Loen himself curled a free kick beyond the reach of keeper Youri Roulaux: 2-0. PSV had little to offer in the first half.

Good start to the second half
PSV U21 burst out of the blocks after the restart and soon reduced the deficit, when Joël Piroe slammed home a hard-struck free kick, leaving keeper Smits with no chance: 2-1. PSV U21 were back on level terms in the 54th minute. Robin Schoonbrood won the ball in midfield and sent a long ball into the path of Amar Catic, who controlled the ball before applying a cool finish: 2-2. It looked the perfect comeback but Almere City retook the lead in the 80th minute. Substitute Thomas Verheydt rose high to head home from a corner. FT: 3-2.
