PSV U21 enjoyed most possession of the ball and created plenty chances at Go Ahead Eagles but could not convert them into goals. At the end of the day, Dennis Haar’s side had to settle for a 1-1 draw in Deventer.
PSV U21 came flying out of the blocks and could have taken the lead inside the opening three minutes, but Donyell Malen failed to tap home Nikolai Laursen’s inch-perfect cross and only hit the crossbar. Malen, who put in an outstanding display, harried Go Ahead Eagles’ defenders and was a constant menace. He deservedly handed his team the lead on 27 minutes, capitalising on some sloppy defending.
0-1 at half-time was not a fair reflection of the score line as PSV U21 had plenty of chances to double their lead. The second half was a more equal affair but Dennis Haar’s team again created the better chances. Ramon Pascal Lundqvist rattled the woodwork, while Philippe Rommens collected the rebound but his shot was straight at Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper Stevens. At the other end, Beltrame was lucky that Yanick van Osch fumbled his shot and it whizzed into the net: 1-1. PSV U21 went in search of a winner and came close on two occasions. They were not rewarded for their attacking play as Malen skewed an effort over the bar and Laursen hit the post.
