PSV U21 had a stuttering start to the new year as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Helmond Sport at De Herdgang training facilities on Friday night.
Verreth on target
A depleted PSV U21 had a bright start against Helmond Sport. Dennis Haar’s young team, including Joël Piroe and Justin Lonwijk, were the better team in the early opening exchanges and took the lead on 14 minutes. After Helmond Sport goalkeeper Van Gassel had denied Lennerd Daneels, Matthias Verreth was played clean through after a clever dummy from Joël Piroe and the Belgian calmly slotted home the opening goal: 1-0. Helmond Sport had one big chance in the first period, but saw an effort cleared off the line.
Helmond Sport turn things around with two goals
The visitors turned things around with two goals in the second half to win the game 2-1. Thomassen came close but sent his shot wide of the post. PSV U21 goalkeeper Mike van de Meulenhof was lucky on the hour mark when he comfortably gathered the ball after it had hit the post. PSV U21 were made to rue missed chances when Helmond Sport struck twice in quick succession. Thomassen netted an equaliser on 65 minutes and five minutes later Mike van de Meulenhof fumbled a long-distance strike by Edwards: 1-2. PSV U21 threw men forward to snatch a draw and Philippe Rommens tried his luck from long range but it was too little too late.
