PSV U21 looked to be heading for a narrow 1-0 win over Helmond Sport but failed to record their second victory of the season when, in the dying seconds, Jeroen Verkennis cancelled out Dirk Abels’ 82nd-minute goal.
Chances were few and far between at De Herdgang training ground on Friday night as most of the action took place in midfield. The two teams often lacked a telling final ball, so both goalkeepers were hardly called into action. Cody Gakpo came close but curled an effort just wide of the post. HT: 0-0.
Abels scored first goal
Laros Duarte replaced Maxi Romero, who had made his comeback, and Joël Piroe led the line in the second goal. Yet PSV U21 did not create any chances of note and Helmond Sport’s defence was not really tested. Substitute Amar Catic had a chance but Helmond Sport keeper Stijn van Gassel made a save to deny him. The deadlock was broken on 82 minutes, when Dirk Abels tapped home a Cody Gakpo cross: 1-0. PSV U21 thought they had wrapped up three points but Jeroen Verkennis scored an injury-time goal to rescue a point for the visitors. FT: 1-1.
