PSV strengthen squad with the signing of Timo Baumgartl

PSV have strengthened their squad with the signing of Timo Baumgartl. The 23-year-old German defender joins PSV from Vfb Stuttgart on a five-year contract. “Timo Baumgartl is a defensive ace”, says PSV director of football John de Jong. “We are proud he has chosen to join PSV.”

First-team regular
The right-footed defender was a first-team regular with VfB Stuttgart, both in the German Bundesliga and in the German 2. Bundesliga. He rose through the ranks at Vfb Stuttgart, broke into the first team and was relegated last season. “And then we saw our chance”, continues De Jong. “Timo has been on our radar for some time but we realised it is hard to sign a German youth international, who plies his trade with a Bundesliga club. But when Vfb Stuttgart were relegated, we presented our philosophy to Timo and he liked our plans a lot. He had a chat in Eindhoven with Daniel Schwaab and our head coach Mark van Bommel and they convinced him to make a move to PSV.”

Schwaab
PSV’s new signing admits that Daniel Schwaab, who also joined PSV from Vfb Stuttgart, three seasons ago, spoke highly of PSV. “It certainly helped me to make up my mind. He was a team mate of mine and I value his opinion”, said Baumgartl. “I’m looking forward to representing PSV. PSV want to lift silverware and that’s exactly the challenge I needed.” Head coach Mark van Bommel is happy PSV have strengthened their defensive options by signing Timo Baumgartl. “He is a versatile defender who can operate in a number of different positions.”

German U21 international
Baumgartl, height 189 cm, featured for Germany U21 at the European Championship. He played the full 90 minutes of all the matches, including the final with Spain. The Spaniards beat their German counterparts 2-1 to claim the trophy
