PSV seal deserved 3-1 win over Fortuna Sittard

PSV sealed a deserved 3-1 win over Fortuna Sittard on Sunday afternoon. Eran Zahavi bagged a first-half brace and Cox pulled one back before substitute Noni Madueke made sure of the three points with a thunderbolt.

Zahavi bags first-half brace
Ahead of the big games against Feyenoord and AZ, PSV locked horns with Fortuna Sittard, who had collected 28 points since the appointment of their new coach Sjors Ultee, just as many as PSV. The hosts had a promising start but Yvon Mvogo and his defenders were not really tested in the early opening stages. PSV took the lead in the tenth minute. Jordan Teze superbly played a long ball into the path of Denzell Dumfries who crossed from the right and Eran Zahavi got ahead of his marker to tap home his eighth Eredivisie goal of the season: 0-1. PSV were in control and moved forward. Zahavi cut into the box but Malen just could not connect with the Israeli’s low cross. The hosts also had their moments and the best chance fell to Lisandro Semedo who blasted the ball over the bar in the 25th minute. Two minutes later, Zahavi doubled PSV’s lead. Malen passed in the run of the overlapping Philipp Max and Zahari produced another thumping finish from the German left-back’s perfect-inch low cross: 0-2. Malen had a great chance to make it three when Yorbe Vertessen played him clean through but former PSV keeper Yanick van Osch saved with his foot to deny him.

The hosts did not give up
Fortuna Sittard did not give up and created chances after the break but substitute Hansson sent an effort wide of the post. PSV won a penalty in the 64th minute when Malen was pulled down in the box by Hansson but VAR overruled referee Allard Lindhout’s decision as the foul had been committed just outside the area. Zahavi stepped to take the resulting free kick but was unlucky only to rattle the post.  Roger Schmidt made a triple substitution in the 67th minute, bringing on Guti, Mohamed Ihattaren and Noni Madueke for Vertessen, Sangare and Götze.

Cox reduced deficit but Madueke sealed the three points
George Cox gave the hosts new hope when he pulled a goal back in the 69th minute, slotting home from a tight angle: 1-2. Hansson had a chance to pull Fortuna Sittard level but had a weak shot at Mvogo, who comfortably gathered. Boscagli limped off the pitch with a hamstring injury with ten minutes remaining and Van Ginkel came off the bench to replace him. PSV found space behind the Fortuna Sittard defenders and Ihattaren’s shot went narrowly wide. Madueke eventually sealed the three points when he started a solo run before unleashing a 20-yard thunderbolt in the 87th minute: 1-3.  PSV maintained their second place in the Eredivisie table, with 54 points, eight points above Feyenoord whom they host in the Philips Stadion next week Sunday.
