PSV maintained their lead at the top of the Eredivisie with a convincing 4-0 win against ten-man Heracles Almelo in the Polman Stadion on a freezing cold Saturday night. Mark van Bommel’s men were leading 2-0 at half-time, thanks to goals from Steven Bergwijn and Daniel Schwaab. Denzel Dumfries added a third goal after the break, while Pereiro put the icing on the cake in the final minute.
First-half goals by Bergwijn and Schwaab
The home side mustered a first opportunity in the very first minute but Jeroen Zoet pulled off a save before Kuwas wildly blasted the rebound over the bar. PSV opened the scoring from their first chance on 12 minutes. Jorrit Hendrix played a long ball into the path of in-form Steven Bergwijn. The winger, who proving to be a nuisance for the Heracles defence, rounded his marker before applying the perfect finish: 0-1. PSV were pressing for a second goal and were rewarded for their attaching intentions when Daniel Schwaab doubled the lead on 33 minutes from a set-piece. Luuk de Jong flicked on a corner and the German centre back capped his return to the starting line-up by heading the ball home from close range in front of the delighted away end : 0-2. Guti was close to making it three in the 39th minute. PSV started a counter attack, involving Dumfries, Bergwijn and Lozano who found Gutiérrez, but his compatriot dragged his shot wide. Kuwas had another opportunity to pull a goal back, but one-on-one with Jeroen Zoet, he skewed his effort wide. Heracles were down to ten men on the stroke of half-time when Jesper Drost was shown a red card by referee Dennis Higler for a reckless challenge on Pablo Rosario.
Dumfries and Gastón Pereiro net second-half goals
PSV enjoyed the bulk of possession after the break against ten-man Heracles, but could not create chances to make their numerical advantage count. Pablo Rosario was booked in the 62nd minute. It was his fifth yellow card and the midfielder will miss next week’s game at home to AZ. Heracles did not give up and Nick Viergever made a fine goal line clearance to deny Kuwas. Van Bommel made his first change in the 73rd minute, bringing on Donyell Malen for Pablo Rosario. Bergwijn came close to scoring his second goal of the match but his effort went agonisingly wide of the post. Denzel Dumfries gave PSV a three-goal advantage with eleven minutes remaining. The right back rose highest to meet a cross and head home another goal from a set piece, leaving Heracles keeper Janis Blaswich with no chance : 0-3. Bergwijn made way for Gastón Pereiro on 85 minutes, while Dante Rigo came off the bench to replace Jorrit Hendrix. The hosts were even reduced to nine men in the closing stages. Lennart Czyborra handled the ball on the goal line and was shown his marching orders. Janis Blaswich saved Gastón Pereiro’s penalty but the Uruguayan made amends sixteen seconds later. Final score: 0-4
