After suffering their first defeat of the season against FC Utrecht last week, PSV will be anxious to return to winning ways when they host AZ in the Philips Stadion on Sunday afternoon.
Last season’s corresponding encounter
PSV claimed a 3-1 victory over AZ in last season’s corresponding encounter, thanks to goals from Steven Bergwijn, Hirving Lozano and Michal Sadílek. They registered their biggest win in 1999 when AZ were hammered 7-1 in the Philips Stadion. Luc Nilis and Chris van der Weerden struck twice while Dennis Rommedahl, Abel Xavier and Ruud van Nistelrooy also got their names on the score sheet. AZ suffered 50 league defeats against PSV in 82 matches.
A 12-year unbeaten run in the Philips Stadion
AZ last enjoyed victory in the Philips Stadion in the 2006/07 season, when Koevermans scored a late goal for AZ to snatch a 2-3 season. PSV took revenge in the return leg, when they bagged all three points in Alkmaar after a 3-1 victory. PSV were third on the last match day of that season and AZ were top of the table. However, AZ suffered a shock defeat at Excelsior, while PSV earned an emphatic 5-1 win at home over Vitesse to clinch the Eredivisie title. AZ did not win a single game in Eindhoven the past twelve years. PSV won ten games and the two teams settled for a draw twice.
PSV are having a fine spell at home, extending their unbeaten run in the Philips Stadion to 53 games. They won 47 matches and drew six. They set a record of a 93-game unbeaten run in the Philips Stadion between 1983 and 1989.
Second in the table
PSV are currently lying second in the Eredivisie table with 23 points from ten games. AZ are fourth with twenty points. FC Utrecht inflicted the first defeat of the season on PSV last weekend, while AZ were beaten 2-4 by Sc Heerenveen.
