PSV dropped two points in a goalless draw against FC Groningen in the Philips Stadion on Sunday afternoon. Phillip Cocu’s men created a great many chances but could not find the back of the net.
Bacuna shown red, De Jong misses penalty
FC Groningen’s defence moved and defended as a compact unit in a lively first-half encounter. The first chance of note of the game fell to Jürgen Locadia on 24 minutes, but his header from a Luciano Narsingh cross was straight at FC Groningen goalkeeper Sergio Padt. The visitors were very close three minutes later. PSV were robbed off the ball in midfield and survived a huge scare when defender Hector Moreno made a late goal line clearance. Locadia curled a free kick past the wall but also a few yards wide of the post. He picked up a groin injury in the act and Gastón Pereiro came off the bench to replace him. FC Groningen were down to ten men on 32 minutes after midfielder Juninho Bacuna had received his second yellow card for yet another wild challenge. PSV had a great opportunity to break the deadlock one minute before the half-time whistle. Hans Hateboer fouled Luciano Narsingh in the penalty area and referee Bas Nijhuis pointed to the spot. PSV captain Luuk de Jong had his spot kick saved by Padt who had rightly guessed de Jong would blast the ball straight down the middle.
Thirty efforts but no goal
Luuk de Jong got a great chance four minutes into the second half when Jetro Willems sent in a tempting cross from the left but it was definitely not his day as he headed over the bar from just a few yards out. PSV stepped up the pace and created some proper chances. Sergio Padt pushed Andrés Guardado’s effort away for a corner and Luuk de Jong had a shot cleared off the line. Nicolas Isimat fired into the side netting from a tight angle. Padt again pulled off heroics when he saved a long-range shot from Pereiro. Steven Bergwijn came on for Lucian Narsingh as the PSV bombardment continued. Pereiro started a great solo run but skewed his effort wide while De Jong could not steer a header on target. With six minutes remaining, Santiago Aria made way for Bart Ramselaar who made his PSV debut. Six minutes of extra time were added but chance after chance went begging as PSV were held to a goalless draw by FC Groningen.
