PSV edge to a 3-1 win over ADO Den Haag

PSV recorded a 3-1 win over ADO Den Haag on Sunday afternoon in the Philips Stadion to move level on points with Ajax. A goal from Denzel Dumfries separated the two teams at half time. Luuk de Jong doubled the lead with seven minutes from time before Thomas Necid pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 88th minute. Substitute Donyell Malen restored a two-goal advantage two minutes later.

Dumfries opens scoring on 20 minutes
Mark van Bommel sent out an attacking team including four forwards. PSV’s head coach made one change from the side that defeated De Graafschap last weekend,  handing a start to Donyell Malen. With Ajax winning on Saturday, PSV knew once again they needed a win to stay level on points with the Eredivisie leaders. PSV started the game with attacking intentions. Luuk de Jong, who made his 201st league appearance for PSV, got a great chance on eight minutes but saw his effort saved by  ADO Den Haag keeper Robert Zwinkels. The visitors were pinned back inside their own half, defending with everyone behind the ball. PSV were rewarded for their attacking style of play in the 20th minute when Denzell Dumfries opening the scoring.  Lozano played in the right back who made a long run before superbly smashing the ball into the net: 1-0. At the other end, Erik Falkenburg had a great opportunity to level the score but sent a free header just wide of the far post. Steven Bergwijn came close to doubling PSV’s lead on 37 minutes.  He was at the end of a well-worked move launched by Hirving Lozano but his header flew agonisingly wide of the post. HT: 1-0.

De Jong doubles the lead and Malen wraps up the three points
PSV patiently passed the ball around and Luuk de Jong headed Nick Viergever’s cross straight at Zwinkels, who was again the busier of the two goalkeepers. Steven Bergwijn burst down the left wing, weaved past two defenders and decided to try his luck rather than play in Lozano who was completely unmarked. Bergwijn had his shot blocked.  PSV controlled the game without creating any clear-cut chances. Malen and Sadilek had shots on target but Zwinkels comfortably gathered their efforts. Érick Gutiérrez started to warm up and the Mexican was greeted by fans chanting his name in unison. The Mexican midfielder replaced Michal Sadilek while Steven Bergwijn made way for Cody Gakpo on 75 minutes. Gutiérrez immediately made his mark. His long-range effort bounced wide of Zwinkels’ goal before he found Gakpo, who turned provider for Lozano. The Mexican’s backheel shot went wide as the chance went begging. PSV finally doubled their lead seven minutes from time. Substitute Cody Gakpo delivered an inch-perfect cross and Luuk de Jong found the back of the net with a trademark bullet header, taking his goal scoring tally for the season to 27: 2-0. Thomas Necid pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 88th minute but Donyell Malen restored a two-goal advantage two minutes later, cleverly heading home Angeliño’s cross, his eighth goal of the season. FT: 3-1. PSV will return to league action on Thursday 25 April when they travel to Tilburg to face Willem II.
