PSV drop precious points in 2-2 draw at FC Emmen

PSV dropped two precious points in a 2-2 shock draw at FC Emmen. Luuk de Jong and Angeliño gave PSV a 2-0 lead with goals scored either side of the break. PSV had two goals ruled out after VAR intervention when Niklas Pederson came off the bench to bag a brace and earn a point for FC Emmen. The match was played in freezing temperatures on the artificial turf pitch in Stadion De Oude Meerdijk on Sunday afternoon.

Luuk de Jong bags 15th league goal of the season
PSV head coach Mark van Bommel named two changes to the starting XI from the one that began against AZ in the last match before the winter break, with Pablo Rosario and Daniel Schwaab coming into the team. After a decent start, PSV worked a deserved opener through captain Luuk de Jong, who headed home Denzel Dumfries’ cross off the inside of the post on 15 minutes to bag his 15th league goal of the season. PSV continued to press forward and had a gilt-edged chance on 27 minutes when Luuk de Jong controlled the ball with his chest before laying it off to Denzel Dumfries. The advancing right back blasted his shot over the bar, with the goal gaping, and the chance went begging. The hosts found themselves pinned back deep inside their own half as Mark van Bommel’s men were dominating the game. FC Emmen only threatened the PSV defence in the 45th minute.

Pederson comes off the bench to bag a brace
PSV looked to take a two-goal cushion after the restart and thought they had doubled the lead on 56 minutes when Cavlan scored an own goal. The goal did not stand, though, as VAR deemed Denzel Dumfries had been in an offside position. Pablo Rosario put the ball into the back of the net but he also had his goal ruled out, as VAR decided Erick Gutiérrez had handled the ball. The Mexican midfielder, who was controversially shown a yellow card for deliberate handball, was replaced by Donyell Malen on 70 minutes. It was third time lucky one minute later when PSV finally got their two-goal advantage. Steven Bergwijn teed up Angeliño, who fired the ball into the top corner to open his PSV scoring account: 0-2. The hosts pulled one back with ten minutes remaining. Chacón played Niklas Pedersen clean through and the substitute produced a classy finish: 1-2. Donyell Malen came close in the 83rd minute but sent a low shot whizzing past the post. Disaster struck for PSV in the second minute of added time when a corner fell into the path of Pederson who headed in a late equaliser: 2-2.
