PSV crowned winter champions after 3-1 win over AZ

PSV end the year on a high. They stay on top of the Eredivisie table after a 3-1 win over AZ in an entertaining and action-packed game in the Philips Stadion on Saturday night. Bergwijn cancelled out Seuntjes’ 16th-minute goal and substitute Michal Sadilek gave PSV the lead straight after the break. Lozano wrapped up the three points from the penalty spot.

Steven Bergwijn honoured
Before the final game of 2018 at the Philips Stadion got under way, Steven Bergwijn was presented with a framed football shirt with the number 100 by Willy van der Kuijlen, mister PSV, for having made 100 appearances in all competitions for PSV.

1-1 at half time
PSV, in their traditional red and white, had more of the ball in the early stages but it was the visitors from Alkmaar who took the lead on 16 minutes when PSV were caught cold on the break. Guus van Til won the ball in midfield and played in Mats Seuntjes who took advantage of the space and kept his nerve to open the scoring: 0-1. Van Bommel made his first change on 29 minutes, bringing on Michal Sadilek for Gaston Pereiro.  PSV were struggling to create clear cut chances against a well-organised and compact AZ defence. Yet it was 1-1 at half-time. Hirving Lozano was the central figure in PSV’s equaliser on 40 minutes. The Mexican darted past a few defenders, had his shot saved by AZ keeper Marco Bizot but Steven Bergwijn was on hand to poke home the rebound from close range: 1-1. PSV were close to taking the lead on the stroke of half time but Nick Viergever blasted his effort over the bar.

Final score: 3-1
PSV started the second half brightly and took the lead for the first time just 90 seconds into the second half. Luuk de Jong found substitute Michal Sadilek and the 19-year-old Czech found the net with a stunning backheel goal: 2-1. There were chances at both ends in a tight game: Van Til forced Jeroen Zoet into a fine save and Denzel Dumfries had a shot blocked, while Bizot made a save to deny Bergwijn and Fredrik Midtsjø hit the post. Both goalkeepers were called into action in quick succession in a game with plenty of end-to-end stuff. Thomas Ouwejans saw his effort saved by Zoet while Bizot pushed away Angelino’s shot. De Jong sent a free kick agonisingly wide of the post on 77 minutes. AZ started to push for an equaliser but PSV killed off the game with six minutes remaining. Dumfries was fouled by Ron Vlaar and El Chucky Lozano made no mistake from the penalty spot to the delight of the home fans: 3-1. The closing stages were also action-packed and Malen, who had come on for Guti, could not direct his shot on target. PSV end the year on a high, with 48 points and 60 goals. Captain Luuk de Jong made a short speech, thanking the fans for their tremendous support and wishing them a merry Christmas.
