Steven Berghuis strikes twice for Feyenoord in the first half
PSV knew they needed a win to get their season back on track and started to press high up the pitch. Mark van Bommel’s men created chances in the early opening exchanges. Donyell Malen had a bicycle kick blocked while Feyenoord keeper Kenneth Vermeer made a save to deny Mohamed Ihattaren. Ritsu Doan played in Steven Bergwijn who blazed his effort over the top of the crossbar. Against the run of play, the hosts took the lead on 19 minutes with their first meaningful chance. A cross was sent into the PSV box and Steven Berghuis broke free from his marker to head home: 1-0. Once again, PSV were made to chase the game. They saw most of the ball, but Feyenoord doubled their lead in the 32nd minute. Denzel Dumfries pulled down Luis Sinisterra in the penalty area. Referee Bas Nijhuis pointed to the spot and Steven Bergwijn converted the spot-kick: 2-0.
Berghuis makes it three from the spot – Pereiro scores consolation goal
PSV burst forward after the break and Donyell Malen had a decent chance to reduce the deficit, but Vermeer pushed his effort away for a corner. Malen picked up an injury after an awkward landing seven minutes into the second half and Cody Gakpo came off the bench to replace him. Feyenoord won a soft penalty in the 64th minute when Nick Viergever was very unlucky to handle the ball in the box. Steven Berghuis stepped up to convert his second penalty of the afternoon and complete his hat-trick: 3-0. At the other end, Bergwijn and Ihattaren missed a sitter. Doan made way for Gaston Pereiro with eleven minutes remaining. PSV attempted to score a consolation goal in the closing stages and substitute Gaston Pereiro had the ball in the back of the net on 84 minutes. They won a number of corners but could not stage a late fightback as they slipped to their fourth defeat of the season and dropped to fourth place in the Eredivisie table.
