PSV crash out of Champions League

PSV failed to book a place in the third qualifying round of the Champions League after suffering a 2-1 defeat against FC Basel in the St.Jakob-Park on Tuesday night. PSV had won the first leg 3-2 but the Swiss are through by virtue of away goals. Eray Cömert opened the scoring for the hosts. Bruma levelled things but Van Wolfswinkel scored a 68th-minute goal to secure a place in the next round for FC Basel. PSV will now enter the third qualifying round of the Europa League and will face Sturm Graz or Haugesund.

1-1  at half time
FC Basel looked to progress to the next round, playing a physical style of football. The tackles were flying high against PSV, who played in their new green third away kit. Mark van Bommel’s team were pinned back in their own half and the hosts took the lead on 8 minutes from a set piece. FC Basel won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area and Eray Cömert delivered an absolute thunderbolt, leaving Jeroen Zoet with no chance: 1-0. PSV were made to chase the game and were lucky that FC Basel’s Dutch forward Ricky van Wolfswinkel fired over the bar before Armindo Bruma levelled the score with a peach of a header in the 23rd minute. Donyell Malen beat his man and sent in a perfect-inch cross and the Portuguese summer signing planted his header into the top corner of the net from ten yards out: 1-1. Nicky Viergever had a good chance to put PSV ahead but the centre half missed the target.

Van Wolfsburg scored winning goal
The second half was a thrilling affair. FC Basel needed a goal to go through and created some chances. Van Wolfswinkel sent a free header wide, while at the other end PSV also had some goal scoring opportunities. Lozano sent an effort at Jonas Omlin and the Swiss keeper pulled off a reflex save to deny Steven Bergwijn. The game could go either way and PSV were made to rue those missed chance when the hosts were again on top in the 68th minute. Van Wolfswinkel tapped home from close range: 2-1. Hirving Lozano, who turned 24 today, made way for Cody Gakpo in the 76th minute. PSV threw everything forward but could not stage a fightback.
