PSV and Ajax shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in the Philips Stadion on Sunday afternoon. Quincy Promes’ opening goal on 62 minutes was cancelled out by Donyell Malen’s 77th minute strike.
Goalless at half-time
The two title contenders, unbeaten in their opening five games, went into Sunday’s clash level on 13 points. PSV head coach Mark van Bommel made one change, preferring Michal Sadílek above Olivier Boscagli at left back. The opening exchanges were played at a frantic pace. Ajax saw most of the ball while PSV looked to threaten on the counter-attack. Mohammed Ihattaren had the first shot on target and Sadílek drilled the rebound across the face of goal. PSV settled into their rhythm with the home fans creating an electric atmosphere. Both teams had their moments. Left back Nicolás Tagliafico brought a fine save out of Jeroen Zoet on 29 minutes, while Dusan Tadic sent a free header inches wide of the post. Quincy Promes had a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring but fired wide from barely six yards out. At the other end, Bruma just could not connect with Ihattaren’s cross and Timo Baumgartl hit an effort straight at André Onana in an entertaining and evenly-fought first half.
Malen’s equaliser cancels out Promes’ opener
The game sparked into life after the restart and Zoet was the busier of the two goalkeepers. Onana palmed away Ihattaren’s free kick for a corner in a fiercely fought contest. Ajax made the breakthrough on 62 minutes when Tadic found Promes, who slotted home into the bottom left corner of the net: 0-1. PSV reacted immediately and came close when Ihattaren wiggled his way past a few defenders and Bruma flicked agonisingly wide of Onana’s right post. Donny van de Beek replaced David Neres in the 69th minute to boost Ajax’s midfield options as PSV went in search of an equaliser. Mark van Bommel made a double substitution on 76 minutes, bringing on Olivier Boscagli for Sadílek and Cody Gakpo for Jorrit Hendrix. PSV were rewarded for their attacking style of play in the 77th minute. Gakpo delivered a cross and Donyell Malen once again proved to be a clinical finisher, taking his goal scoring tally for the season to seven: 1-1. There were some nervy moments in the closing stages but no more goals were scored, as both teams settled for a 1-1 draw. PSV will be back in league action on Wednesday when they welcome FC Groningen.
