The football season opens in style on Saturday with the Johan Cruyff Shield, a match between PSV, the Eredivisie champions, and Feyenoord, the winners of the KNVB Cup. The venue for the curtain raiser for the upcoming season is the Philips Stadion. Mark van Bommel’s side face Feyenoord in confident mood, following a bright pre-season campaign, with wins over Galatasaray (3-1), Olympiakos (4-0) and Valencia (2-1).
Pre-season was taking shape
New head coach Mark van Bommel guided PSV to three victories in five pre-season matches. After suffering a 5-3 defeat against Anderlecht and settling for a 1-1 draw with Swiss club Xamax Neuchatel (two matches in which many players got game time under belts),PSV’s pre-season campaign was taking shape. PSV claimed a convincing 3-1 win over Galatasaray and ran out winners against Olympiakos and Valencia.
Right back Denzel Dumfries, who joined PSV from sc Heerenveen in summer, made his mark for his new club, with some strong physical presence and overlapping runs. He had two assists against Galatasaray before he was taken off with a slight groin problem but put on another convincing display against Valencia. Attacking midfielder Gastón Pereiro as well as Luuk de Jong (three goals in two matches), also played a significant role towards steering PSV to victory.
Feyenoord were inconsistent
Feyenoord were inconsistent with their pre-season performances. They recorded an emphatic 5-0 win over FC Basel before suffering an embarrassing 3-1 defeat at BSC Young Boys. They came back from 3-0 down against Fenerbahçe to draw 3-3 and concluded their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 victory against Levante last weekend. Keeper Brad Jones played his last game for Feyenoord and Justin Bijlow is set to replace him between the sticks.
