Head coach Phillip Cocu previewed this weekend’s Eredivisie game against Heracles during the weekly press conference at The Herdgang on Friday afternoon. PSV take on the Almelo side - who somewhat surprisingly sit second in the league table - on Saturday evening at 19:45. PSV will top the Eredivisie table for at least a day if they bag the full three points. “We once more need the full three points,” Cocu compared Saturday evening’s match with the game against Manchester United.
Cocu: PSV high on confidence
Cocu started the press conference by looking back at Tuesday’s 2-1 win over the Premier League side. He compared that game with the match versus Heracles Almelo after being asked about it by the press in attendance and warned against complacency. “It can be a tricky transition. We played a major game, but we must move on and focus again. We need the full three points just as much as we needed them against United,” commented Cocu. The PSV coach then went on to stress that Tuesday’s victory can also have a positive effect. “It is a confidence boost when you beat an opponent of that calibre. Sometimes, you need something different to emerge victorious and you have to be capable of just getting a good result. We did just that and have to build on it in Almelo. We certainly have enough confidence to be optimistic ahead of the game.”
Cocu was full of respect for Saturday’s opponent Heracles Almelo. “They have recorded some superb results and have shown that they are a solid team that does not give away much space. They have some dangerous wingers and a proper target man in Wout Weghorst. We saw last year that it is never easy to play in Almelo,” referred Cocu to his side’s narrow 2-1 win in 2014-15. PSV won last season courtesy of a last-minute goal from Karim Rekik. Another defender who made the spotlights this week is Héctor Moreno. The Mexican centre-back was involved in the incident that saw left-back Luke Shaw fracture his leg on Tuesday. Cocu and Moreno visited Shaw on Thursday afternoon to wish him well. Shaw was pleased with their support. “The fact that he was happy to welcome us says it all,” said Cocu. “We personally wished him well and good luck with his recovery. Fortunately, he wasn’t in as much pain as before. I think it’s a good thing that we paid him a visit. We are happy to help Shaw in whatever way possible if there is something we can do for him.”
Andrés Guardado also sustained an injury in Tuesday’s encounter and will consequently miss the game versus Heracles. “We don’t know yet exactly how long he will be out of action,” stated Cocu. “It remains unclear for now, because the swelling in his ankle needs to subside first before we can do anything.” Cocu also received some good news from the treatment table: Adam Maher returns to the match squad for the game versus Heracles.
