“Only Sporting is on our minds”

Jorrit Hendrix was on the bench when PSV kicked off their Eredivisie season, but the midfielder got more playing time recently. He accompanied head coach Mark van Bommel at the conference ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Europe League Group D opening game against Sporting CP. “We hammered Vitesse 5-0 on Saturday but this will be a different game.”

200 appearance milestone
Jorrit Hendrix was linked with a move to the Italian league during the summer transfer window but a transfer was never completed. In fact, Hendrix reached the 200 appearance milestone at the start of the season, when he was brought on as a substitute. He was included in the starting line-up against Vitesse last Saturday. “Hopefully the victory is a springboard for the rest of the season. But we should not be over-confident. This will be a different game, on the European stage.”

Sporting CP are a big club and look favourites to go through to the Europa League knockout stages. The Portuguese side earned most coefficient points of all the teams participating in Group D. “You might argue Sporting and PSV are the two best teams of Group D, but having said that, I would like to add I do not want to downplay the performances of LASK and Rosenborg. We realise that Sporting had a stuttering start to the season, but should not attach too much importance to that.”

PSV host Ajax in a top-of-the-table clash in the Philips Stadion on Sunday, but Hendrix denies that PSV have one eye to the clash with Ajax. “We look forward to playing two huge games in quick succession, but it’s first things first. We will not look ahead at Sunday’s game before Thursday night at 9pm.”
