Maxi Romero scored from the penalty spot to make a successful comeback for PSV U21. Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team recorded a 2-1 win over VVV-Venlo in PSV Campus De Herdgang on Friday night in ‘a game with two faces’.
PSV U21 dominate first-half proceedings
Maxi Romero made his presence felt in the early opening stages. The Argentine striker tried to round his marker, but the visitors’ defence could avert the danger. Johan Bakayoko delivered a decent cross into the box but Cheick Touré aimed his header straight at the keeper. PSV U21 created the better chances and were rewarded for their attacking intentions in the 24th minute, when Bakayoko pounced on a rebound: 1-0. The hosts kept on dominating first-half proceedings and Romero stepped up to convert a penalty in the 44th minute to double PSV U21’s lead.
Hectic closing stages
Erik Sorga halved the deficit seconds after the restart to give the visitors new energy. PSV U21 goalkeeper Vincent Müller pulled off a save to keep his team on top. Neither team succeeded in creating any proper chances until the hectic closing stages. VVV-Venlo had a few shots on target while PSV U21 threatened to strike on the counter. PSV bravely held on for their third win of the season.
