Luuk de Jong came off the bench to score a winner for PSV against Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday afternoon. The substitute was smiling brightly when he faced the media after the game. “I always give my all on the pitch”, he said. Head coach Phillip Cocu was delighted with De Jong’s impact from the bench.
Work very hard
Joshua Brenet delivered a cross from the left and De Jong swivelled away from his marker before cleverly tapping home. “I am always willing to work very hard and my main goal is to help the team”, said De Jong. “And it is very special to score the winning goal today.” PSV recorded their tenth Eredivisie win in a row and have moved ten points clear of Ajax. The Amsterdam outfit play host to PSV next Sunday. ‘I think it will be a very tough game in Amsterdam. Ajax are still title contenders and AZ are having a good spell.”
Cocu happy to have De Jong
“We are very happy to have Luuk de Jong”, said Phillip Cocu at the post-match conference. “We are delighted with the part he played today and his impact from the bench.” Cocu was less pleased with the team display. “We could not break down Sparta’s back line. Our game plan to play between the lines was not executed well in the first half.” Yet Cocu hailed a deserved victory. “Unfortunately we didn’t score a second goal, although we created plenty of chances. The main thing is that we’ve bagged the three points again”, concluded Cocu.
