PSV head coach Roger Schmidt has confirmed at the press conference ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Galatasaray that Marco van Ginkel will be the new club captain, with Cody Gakpo becoming vice-captain. The players’ council for this season consists of Van Ginkel, Gakpo, André Ramalho, Nick Viergever and Mario Götze.
Van Ginkel last wore the captain’s armband in the 2017/18 Eredivisie season, when PSV were crowned champions. The midfielder made a move to Chelsea but was sent out on loan to PSV last season. Van Ginkel returned to full fitness at the First Team side at PSV Academy De Herdgang and extended his contract with PSV this summer. Schmidt: “Marco has gained a lot of experience and he has shown before that leadership ability comes to him naturally. I am very much pleased he has regained full fitness last season and will be a leader on the pitch and a role model off it.”
Schmidt went on to explain why he had chosen Cody Gakpo to be PSV's vice-captain. “Cody knows the club inside out and loves PSV. He can put his ideas across to his team mates and will always find some extra energy to perform and achieve well.”
