20-year-old Donyell Malen has undergone successful minor surgery on his left knee in Pittsburgh in the USA. The surgery was performed by Dr. Volker Musahl, professor of orthopaedic surgery. The PSV striker will likely miss the rest of the season.
“We may assume that Donyell Malen had successful surgery. There were no complications after surgery”, said PSV’s medical manager Dr. Wart van Zoest, who was in the operation theatre in Pittsburgh. “Donyell will stay here for at least two weeks before he returns to Eindhoven to start his thorough rehabilitation programme.”
The forward sustained the injury in PSV’s 3-1 defeat at Feyenoord on 21 December. After consultation with PSV’s medical staff, he decided to see an orthopaedic surgeon in America. “My knee injury is less serious than first feared”, explained Malen. “The surgeon told me it was a minor operation and I breathed a sigh of relief. Of course I felt upset when I sustained the injury. I will be sidelined for a long spell but things could have been far worse. I want to thank my family and all the other people very much for their support. I will do my very best to come back stronger and better”, insisted Malen.
