Luuk de Jong: “Lucky to snatch a late win”

PSV captain Luuk de Jong admitted that luck had been on PSV’s side when Dante Rigo slotted home in the final minute to give them a dramatic late 1-2 win over Fortuna Sittard. “It was a tough game”, he said, speaking to the media after the game.

'We put in a poor display’
“It was a narrow escape. Dante Rigo netted the winner in the last minute. Fortuna Sittard did a good job”, said De Jong. “We told each other at half-time to pass the ball around quicker and with more intent but we did not succeed in doing so. We could not find space behind their defensive line and actually put in a poor display.” Seconds before Fortuna Sittard scored an equaliser, it looked like a foul had been committed on De Jong, but referee Pol van Boekel waved play on. “I think it was a foul, but what could I do? Lie down?” Head coach Mark van Bommel shared his captain’s opinion. “At the end of the day, we won but I was not happy when Fortuna levelled the score.”

Wake-up call
PSV’s head coach thought the 1-1 equaliser served as a wake-up call. “We were anxious to kill off the game, but lacked patience and sharpness to create goalscoring opportunities. Fortunately there was enough time left to put things straight and wrap up all three points”, concluded Van Bommel.
