Luuk de Jong joins PSV 100 club

Luuk de Jong scored his 100th goal for PSV on Sunday afternoon in all competitions, but he was in particular happy PSV had bagged the three points. “I’m not really interested in who scored the goals. The only thing that really matters is the score at the end”, he said, speaking after the 5-0 win over Fortuna Sittard.

“A victory comes first”, insisted PSV’s captain before looking back on his 100th goal in a PSV shirt. Not surprisingly, he headed in Cody Gakpo’s cross to double the lead after the break. “I could only flick on the ball and saw it sail past the keeper”, said De Jong, who scored 44 headed goals, 37 with right and 19 with his left foot. De Jong also scored his 101st and 102nd goal, completing a second-half hat-trick against 10-man Fortuna Sittard. “It is, of course, great to make a hundred goals for a club. We wanted to dominate the game and did not put out foot off the pedal. The transition from defence to attack did not go smoothly at times but we are obviously happy to claim a 5-0 victory.”

Mixed feelings for Mark van Bommel
There were mixed feelings for head coach Mark van Bommel, who said that the victory was marred by the severe ankle injury that Steven Bergwijn had sustained. The forward was clearly in a lot of pain when he was stretchered off the pitch. “He has been taken to hospital to be assessed for a serious-looking ankle injury.” Van Bommel thought his team had been sloppy in possession in the first half. “Our passing game lacked accuracy. We improved after Cody Gakpo had been brought on as a substitute and we were in full control after we had doubled the lead. Then we played some fine football and scored a number of beautiful goals.”
