PSV captain Luuk de Jong was an interested spectator when the UEFA Europa League round play-off was made, as two of his former clubs, FC Barcelona and Sevilla, were in the hat. And he got what he had hoped for: a tie with Sevilla, on Thursday 16 and 23 February, the club he helped to win the Europa League in 2020.
Meeting people at Sevilla
“For me, this is the best draw I could think of”, said PSV’s captain. I’m really looking forward to meeting people at my former club once again. Sevilla are not having the best of spells but we will not meet them before February. One thing is for sure: they are two very special games for me. I can hardly wait.”
First leg in Spain
Sevilla finished third in the UEFA Champions League Group G, behind Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund. Sevilla finished above FC Copenhagen. Sevilla are having a poor spell in the Spanish La Liga. They are sitting seventeenth in the table, with eleven points from thirteen games.
“Of course we have chances to progress to the round of 16”, said De Jong. “We have won several big games this season, against AS Monaco, Feyenoord, Arsenal and we showed Ajax yesterday what we are up to. It is crucial to get a good result in Andalusia in the first leg so that we will be in a good position when we welcome Sevilla for the return leg in the Philips Stadion.” The first leg is scheduled to take place in Sevilla on Thursday 16 February and the return in Eindhoven on Thursday 23 February.
