Mark van Bommel spoke to the press ahead of the trip to FC Utrecht. PSV travel to Stadion Galgenwaard this Sunday to face FC Utrecht. PSV’s head coach first of all provided an injury update during his weekly press briefing at De Herdgang.
Steven Bergwijn and Hirving Lozano are doubtful for Sunday’s clash. Van Bommel confirmed that both players have participated in parts of the team training. “They are assessed daily. I am happy they are back on the training pitch. They will face a fitness test tomorrow.”
Van Bommel is expecting a tricky test in Utrecht. “We always have a tough game against FC Utrecht in Stadion Galgenwaard. FC Utrecht have appointed Dick Advocaat as their new head coach. Who could have foreseen in any way that we would meet again? When I returned as a player to PSV five seasons ago, Dick Advocaat was head coach in Eindhoven! And now we will meet again as head coaches. It will be a special match for the two of us”, said Van Bommel, smiling brightly.
When Bergwijn and Lozano are not fit to start, Cody Gakpo and Mohammed Ihattaren are ready to replace them against FC Utrecht. They came on as substitutes in PSV’s 5-0 win over Fortuna Sittard last Sunday and helped their team to an emphatic victory. “Our Academy has been doing a great job for some years now. Some exciting young talents have made a first-team breakthrough. They have been given playing time and look to succeed at the highest level. They are determined to make their mark in training and are anxious to improve as a player.”
Van Bommel was asked to comment on the development of Mohammed Ihattaren. “He is only sixteen and has already made his senior debut, which says it all. He has no problems joining the first-team squad football wise. Few players play this role at the age of sixteen.”
