Locadia doubtful for Vitesse game

Phillip Cocu faced the media at De Herdgang training ground on Friday afternoon, ahead of Sunday’s league game at Vitesse in Arnhem. PSV’s head coach provided an injury update: “Jürgen Locadia is doubtful for Sunday’s clash with Vitesse. He trained separate from the group and will face a late fitness test.”

Big game
Cocu had also some good news from the treatment table. “Gaston Pereiro and Steven Bergwijn, who missed the Cup tie at FC Volendam, are fit again and will be called up to the match squad. We have a near full-strength squad to select from when we meet Vitesse, lying third in the table, in a big game. Vitesse are having a good run. They have shown that they have quality and range and bring in experienced players. We will face a tough test”, predicted Cocu.

‘We will not take things lightly’
Six points separate the two teams in the table, while PSV have taken a five-point lead over nearest rival Ajax. “That’s all very nice and I understand that people think we are title contenders but we are in no position to take things lightly. When our competitors win their game and we suffer defeat, our lead will vanish like snow. The 2017/18 campaign has just begun; we are only ten games into the new season. We’ll have to be at our best, work hard and show dedication at every game. If we fail to do so, we are vulnerable.”

Facts & figures on Vitesse
Vitesse locked horns with PSV exactly one year ago, on 29 October, with PSV running out 2-0 winners, extending a remarkable record of success in Arnhem.

Twenty seasons without a loss
PSV have never suffered defeat at Vitesse in their GelreDome home ground. Vitesse have been without a win against PSV in twenty Eredivisie encounters, drawing nine and losing eleven games. They last savoured the sweet taste of success on 16 February 1991 in a 1-0 victory, thanks to a goal from Arco Jochemsen. Phillip Cocu made an appearance for PSV on the day.

PSV conceded a penalty in each of their last four away games.

Back on familiar ground
Phillip Cocu will be back on familiar ground (he made 137 league appearances for Vitesse) and will celebrate his birthday in GelreDome for the second year running. Marco van Ginkel played 93 games in a Vitesse shirt and Eloy Room made 133 starts between the sticks for Vitesse.
