21-year-old left back Toni Lato joins PSV on a season-long loan deal from Valencia CF. “Toni is a very technical and skilful defender, with plenty of attitude”, says PSV director of football John de Jong. “This is a new challenge which I am very much looking forward to”, said the new Spanish signing, who did not hide his excitement of joining PSV on loan.
A high potential
Mark van Bommel is happy PSV have bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Toni Lato. “It was our main priority to fill the void left by the departures of Aziz Behich and Angeliño”, explains PSV’s head coach. “Lato is a young, promising player with a high potential. We always look for new players to add that extra bit of quality to the team. I am delighted we have been able to persuade him to join us. We will do our very best to make him feel at home, so that he will settle in quickly.”
The Spanish youth international is a product of Valencia’s famous academy. Jordi Alba, who is a FC Barcelona player, and José Gaya also rose through the ranks at Valencia. “We set our sights on signing Toni some time ago. He found first-team appearances hard to come by due to the presence of Gaya and we drew up a plan for him to make the next step in his career”, continued De Jong. “Toni obviously was aware of Angeliño’s impressive campaign with PSV last season and is looking forward to a similar scenario. We are happy he has chosen a move to PSV to continue his development as a player.”
