Marco van Ginkel wore the captain’s armband when PSV took on PAOK FC in their final pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening. Head coach Roger Schmidt named Van Ginkel as one of the candidates to lead the team out this season, but has not made a final decision yet.
Lead by example
Van Ginkel was proud the wear the captain’s armband and happy with Schmidt’s flattering words, who said that the midfielder is a great example in terms of leadership. "I’ve been with PSV for some time yet and know what it takes to captain a side”, said Van Ginkel. "It is not my ultimate desire to be the captain of the team, but I would like very much to lead by example." He was given a chance to shine in front of 20,000 fans who had returned to the Philips Stadion: "It gave me goosebumps to see all these fans again.”
Look forward to the new season
Van Ginkel is looking forward to the start of the new season. PSV will have their first proper test when they face Galatasaray. "Our pre-season was tough but we had fun. We had a good training camp in Germany and we know what is expected of us. It is a dream for all players to take part in the Champions League. We still have a long way to go but are ready for the challenge.”
